Introducing... The Craft Showcase!

Hello there, dear Hobbits,

As we barrel toward our fourth annual Hobbits Hoedown this November (just over 100 days to go!), we are delighted to re-introduce an old friend in a new light; The Craft Showcase!

The Craft Showcase, previously, the Heirloom Exhibition, will be coming out of the far forgotten corners of the dance hall and into the spotlight with a designated showcase activity not unlike our food showcases.

What is it?

The Craft Showcase invites all our hobbits to gather and celebrate the tinkers, carvers, weavers, knitters and makers of all marvellous things in a scheduled craft showcase where their finest creations are presented.

There will be eight ribbon awards for this showcase, lovingly awarded by two designated judges from each family. But take heed - what wins a ribbon from a Bluffwater judge, who loves fine detail and intricacy, might not win the heart of a Higgleby, who delights in the absurd and mischievous!

Each family has its own virtues so you never know what might tickle their fancy.

Why has it changed?

Reading through feedback from both 2023 and 2024, there was a consistent feeling of passive attention toward the heirloom exhibit, and this year we are trialling a more focused activity that we think will celebrate the incredible craftsmanship that attends our games in a more exciting way.

Is it any different from the Show and Tale?

Yes! Both celebrate creativity but in its very different forms. The Craft Showcase is a display of handmade items where creations are judges by family virtues for ribbon awards. The Show and Tale is a performance event where hobbits step up to entertain their fellow hobbit folk with songs, stories or skits for cheers and applause. In summary, the craft showcase is for art you make while the show and tale is for art you share.

Splendid! If you haven’t yet, be sure to join your Hobbit Family Group on Facebook. It’s where you’ll meet your kin, share outfit ideas, plan your picnic baskets, and hatch delightful little plans. Don't have Facebook? Thats alright too! We will be hosting plenty of pre-game events for you to meet and mingle with your respective families before the Hoedown too.
